Roast Veggie Bagel at Crown Street Grocer, Surry Hills

I’ve worked in Surry Hills for almost two months now and until today, somehow I’ve managed to miss Crown Street Grocer as a lunch spot altogether.

Maybe because it is also Italian supermarket that sells  “gourmet” tomatoes and not-so-student-friendly bags pasta, I just didn’t expect it to have anything to settle the rumbles without blowing the entire day’s budget.

Turns out I was totally wrong. There is a whole counter full of salads, sandwiches, quiches and pastas that are well within cash reach and judging by the length of the queue, must be pretty delish too!

This roasted veggie bagel certainly passes the taste test.  Sun-dried tomatoes, grilled eggplant, artichokes, pesto and spinach in chewy Iggy’s Bread – it is the some of the best $7 I’ve spent on a sandwich in quite some time.

The minor downer is the tangelo, which at $1.10 is a bit is on the exxy side… and it’s full of seeds. Ehh. Probably won’t run back for another of those.

Crown Street Grocer

The bill: Bagel – $7 + Tangelo – $1.10 = $8.10
The service: Counter service, eat in and takeaway. Super duper attentive.
Also on the menu: Asian noodle salad, quinoa and feta salad, homemade lasagnes, salami ficelles, lentil soup, smoked salmon quiche…
Toastie tip: If you prefer your toasted bagel warm and golden (ie. actually toasted), you might want to clarify this. I wondered if mine had even hit the press.
