Tempeh Burger with Satay Sauce at Laurie’s Vegetarian, Bondi
For me, veggie burgers fall into two distict camps. The “with chips” variety – usual burger-bar fare minus the beef pattie, and the healthy kind – bursting with so many nutrients it almost defies burger status altogether. Though I’m usually a sucker for the first, Laurie’s Tempeh Burger is a tasty example of the latter.
The choice of sauce is yours, but tempeh and satay seem a natural pair. The creaminess of the satay contrasts well with the texture of the tempeh and at first bite, fears of a dry, under-salted too healthy burger are put to rest. Fresh coleslaw and lettuce give it some peppery crunch.
The burger comes with a side of brown rice and though no subsitute for fries, it’s there and it’s totally fine. Take it or leave it.
Laurie’s Vegetarian has been the veggie sanctuary of zen Bondi-ites for years and doesn’t show signs of fading anytime soon. A nice, feel-good option before hitting the beach.
